Sex shouldn't hurt, nor should peeing!
As a Board-certified urologist for over 20 years, I can tell you that many of my patients suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections and dyspareunia due to menopause, which I have managed conservatively over the years.
Now that the FDA has removed the Black Box warning on estrogen replacement, we can finally end some pain...here are some facts.
- You don't have to suffer...Why?
GSM - genitourinary syndrome of menopause: vaginal wall thinning, vaginal dryness, and loss of stretch and plumpness of the vagina occur because of decreasing estrogen. Vaginal estradiol is being used now even in breast cancer patients; however, I prefer DHEA or estriol(which is poorly bound) in those patients.
- Pelvic floor therapy...
Pelvic Floor Muscle Rehabilitation is great for urinary incontinence and sexual health. Regular sex is also good for maintaining healthy vaginal tissue.
- Lubricants...
This alone won't fix the pain. Water-based lubricants are often more comfortable than K-Y. Replens and Liquibeads are more like moisturizers.
