Goal setting can seem like a daunting task. Many business leaders were discouraged after setting goals for 2020 and then the year took a turn and goals took a back burner to staying in business, keeping your employees and your customers engaged.

This boosted the concept of the mini goal.  Taking control of something we can accomplish.

Since long term goals seem unreasonable, I suggest people and companies start with the concept of Visioning.  Think forward 5 years out and think about what you want your life and your business to look like at that time.  Then narrow it to 2 years out.  Let go of limitations, think and play big, especially on the 5 year vision.

Now that you have a vision in place start look at this current year and identify SMART goals.  These are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Oriented.  The more you take your goals through the SMART process the more specific they will become and therefore the more achievable they are.

When you look at the word Achievable this is where you create your action items.  Your next step is looking at your calendar and starting to work on your Mini-Goals.

Look at the year goal and break it down to each quarter of the year, then break it down to by month and then start calendaring your action steps each week.   It is great to have accountability when achieving your goals, if you have a colleague, coach, mentor that you meet with on a regular basis to hold yourself accountable. This is also helpful when actions need to be shifted based on learning experience and more insight to have someone to brainstorm and see it from a different point of view who is not as close or tied to the result.
