Speaking Point: 1) With the production of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," "19 Kids and Counting," "9 by Design," and the “Octomom”, television viewers are amused by the enormous task of being a responsible parent while raising a large family coupled with all the complexity and conflict. At some point in our lives, we all experience family drama!
Speaking Point: 2) Remember the popular 1970s scripted family shows called “The Waltons” or “Eight is Enough?” Speaking Point: 3) Are the children being exploited by personal and/or corporate profit motives? Let’s not forget the “Balloon Boy” hoax? Speaking Point: 4) Societal interest in large family drama has been around a long time. Have you ever heard of the Canada’s Dionne quintuplets who were born in 1934? Well, the Ontario provincial government declared the parents unfit and the quintuplets were later put on display as a tourist attraction. Speaking Point: 5) Should California enact a law comparable to the 1939 Coogan Law which requires fifteen (15) percent of a minor’s earnings be placed into a blocked trust account? Speaking Point: 6) Are these children receiving proper attention and care? Speaking Point: 7) For every “Jon & Kate Plus 8”, how many large families are financially struggling? Are the taxpayers subsidizing these large families?
