Now Munich Germany - What is next?

Speaking Point: Emerging reports are coming out of Germany about a shooter at a mall. At present the injuries are not confirmed. The identity of the shooter is not known. It could very well be unrelated to the many recent terrorist incidents across Europe and elsewhere. Or, it could be yet another attack on a soft target. So what does it mean for you where you are?

Speaking Point: No one can know, no one can predict when and where an organized or as they are called, rogue, attack will happen. A rogue attack can occur with little or no planning. It can be done by a completely unknown character with as yet to be known issues and ties to a cause. It also could simply be a sick, mentally ill or just plain angry person. These details only matter to you for your sense of awareness and preparedness. This is not to suggest preparedness like you wearing a protective vest when going to the market. It is about you be aware that there may (even likely) be no warning before one of these events happen.

Speaking Point: The police may be in full force, well equipped, practiced on all the latest techniques, but if they do not know something is going to happen, they will not be there to intervene. So it is on you to be ready to respond with awareness before, planning in your head for the "what if's." And the mental attitude that you will react in the best way for your safety.

Speaking Point: In Orlando Florida there were police working at the location before and at the point when the attack began. People still died. The killing carried on for hours, even with the presence of officers inside.

Speaking Point: In Nice France, because of the environment where the attack took place, people at one end of the long street did not know what was happening, and approaching them from the other end. Even when people began running towards them, many simply fled out of normal panic reactions. That was good, but in some unfortunate cases, not good enough.

Speaking Point: What was needed was more awareness of the potential for any and all forms of violence and attack. In most societies this is not an issue or constant as it might be in some other societies. You can be assured that in Israel citizens are always at some level, on alert. In Syria, even where the fighting is not constant, people are always looking, listening and prepared to move to some form of safety.

Speaking Point: These are unfortunate realities for society today. Wishing them away does no good in the real world. There is an existing dynamic of violence, hatred and hostilities, with grievances that go beyond any of our lifetimes, that remain unresolved for some people. Dialogue and political actions will not settle things in the present moment.

Speaking Point: Globally, and particularly in the U.S. support for our protectors, law enforcement, the military, and encouragement for our politicians, intelligence officials and legislators is critical. But in the meantime, your own preparedness is more important.

Speaking Point: You may at a moments notice, be on the front lines of crime, terrorism, religious strife, social conflict, national struggles and political unrest that turns to violence.
