Is Domestic and International Travel Safe?

Speaking Point: So many variables to answer, this may in fact may be an unfair question. Getting the obvious out of the way; it is safe to travel, generally, until it is not! Hate that response. Well the point is that, nations around the world are all dependent upon travel for business and tourism. All or most countries want you to come and visit. All want to do their very best to ensure that you come, have a great time, tell your friends and return, soon and often, with those friends! But the fact of the matter, even the most stable countries, those considered “First World” like America, England, Paris, Germany, etc. will do their level best to ensure safety, but at some point will fail.

Speaking Point: Governments must negotiate their plans and regulations with the public they serve and also with the industry they are trying to regulate. The ability to impose heavy restrictions will only be enacted in the most dire or threatening of circumstances. If there has not been a specific attack, or if there is not direct and explicit intelligence indicating an attack, you will not find governments placing harsh or difficult restrictions.

Speaking Point: So, what does that mean for you? The smart traveler, private or business, does their homework. By homework I mean, they will check with all the appropriate agencies/entities on what the current climate is where they intend to travel. They will review the current climate for persons from their country, traveling to the other specific country. They will review and consider their personal threat profile. By that I mean, a business person, traveling with intellectual property may well have a much higher threat profile for normal crime or business espionage than a young tourist going on a “walkabout.” Each and all will need consideration, but they may have different kinds of considerations

Speaking Point: Like the U.S. most countries will have some type of safety and security systems to review. The U.S. State Department maintains a constantly updated travel advisory that is available online. The Central Intelligence Agency produces a country profile that covers all countries of the world with valuable social, cultural and economic information that will educate the world traveler. And then there is Google! Is there anything that you cannot research on Google…I think not!

Speaking Point: Among the common recommendations that companies like mine, “Escape The Wolf, llc.” offer are ways in which a person can review their own cultural profile and how it might impact the location they choose to travel to. Also we offer many points about the nature and manner of people living in many of the countries, with pointers like hand gestures that are commonly accepted in the U.S., but thought to be offensive in other cultures.

Speaking Point: The most important considerations have to be to simply do not go to high threat locations. They are generally not a secret. You know them by the news headlines of people being raped, attacked, killed and kidnapped. If the country is at war I’m thinking you may not want to go on safari there. Insightful stuff like that! Currently in Brazil they are facing a health scare with the Zika Virus. This is a mosquito borne virus that is particularly dangerous to women who have not yet become pregnant. The effect on these women is that they run the risk of having babies born with defects. At present there is no known way to prevent this virus beyond not being bitten by the mosquitos that carry them, which are presently mostly found in Brazil

Speaking Point: But, other than all that…travel, see the world, have fun…but watch your “6!”
