Is It Getting Better…Or Worse? The Threat of Terrorism to Entertainment!
Guestpert: Henderson Cooper
Category: Sports

Speaking Point: Is it? How could you possibly know! The experts will opine about trends and indicators. But in fact no one knows and no one can predict. Many Americans complained and protested about the NSA spying…and yet they were the ones listening and looking for those trends and indicators. An the crying and complaining resulted in negative attention to the methods used. It’s called spying! And it is an attempt to get what is not known, by the people you expect to know.

Speaking Point: That being said, Is it getting worse? It happened in Paris, not Orlando, not Los Angeles. So does that make it ok? First, these would both be considered soft targets. Second, they are both privately owned and managed entities with private protection personnel and methods being used. So that makes them more of a soft target. But what is more important, they are places where large groups of people gather, they are expensive and for some people symbols of decadence, and they are great environments’ for blending into the crowd. This represents fertile grounds for terrorists.

Speaking Point: With the upcoming Super Bowl in Glencoe Arizona we can expect tremendous effort on the part of the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and local and state law enforcement. We can expect communication and coordination with the Intelligence Community. But will that be enough. It has often been said that it is easier to stop and army than one individual bent on committing mischief. That is what needs to be considered here.

Speaking Point: Can security be guaranteed, no. Can security be hardened to a point that an army AND an individual could be discouraged, yes! But we are talking about America. What of Paris and what of Rio de Janeiro?

Speaking Point: Paris, if it can be said, benefits from having been attacked several times already. It means that they are more on alert. That they were vulnerable to attack might mean that they were not very good at protecting their citizens…but that is an issue for another time. In America everyone would be jumping all over the CIA, FBI, Homeland Security and whatever local authorities might be available for blame. So Paris can be considered on alert and thus perhaps more ready.

Speaking Point: Rio, on a completely different hand, is another matter. What has happened in Rio in the last…well, simply put, what has happened there? In terms of world terrorism issues, nothing! Yes, they have a tremendous problem with gangs and general crime. They have a historical problem with corruption. But not much has been reported on the terrorism front in that area. Are they on alert? Well, consider this. Much attention has been put on whether they would be able to clean up the streets, stem the tide of crime, bring the gangs under control, finance and build the sites and infrastructure necessary for the games and clean up the environment. Despite their promises to accomplish most of these points, it is widely reported that they are in failure mode.

Speaking Point: None of these points even touch on the issue of terrorism with the exception of general crime. But we all know that terrorism and crime do not sleep together. Most criminals are not terrorists. Simply put, their interests and goals are not in line.

Speaking Point: There remains a tremendous challenge to authorities in Brazil to finish the basic facilities and infrastructure to host and carry on the games. There is a bigger cloud over the head of that country to assure, anyone, that they will be able to reasonably protect tourist, athletes and spectators leading up to, during and immediately after the games.

Speaking Point: Would I go and take my family if I had the time and money? Yeah, I would. But I am not the average American.
