Speaking Point: It's that time of year again when summer is winding down and "Back To School" ads are all over the place.
Kids have been in summertime mode for 3 months now, nowhere ready to think about school.
Here are some tips for parents to get everyone "School Ready!" Speaking Point: 1. Plan a family meeting with everyone two weeks before the first day of school and discuss the details of the upcoming fall schedule. Speaking Point: 2. Review and remind everyone of the rules, roles, rituals and responsibilities that go on during the school year. Speaking Point: 3. Start easing your child into a school like schedule, similar to the one the kids will be living during the actual school year, including "school week" curfews and bedtime hour, and “weekend curfews” and bedtime hour. Speaking Point: 4. For younger ones, it is helpful to make a fun trip to the school and visit the room (and meet the teacher) if possible. You may need prior approval from your child’s school. Speaking Point: 5. One week before school begins; you and your child need to be ready to be in full force with the school time restrictions on electronics, such as computer time, social media access, phone time, and television time. Speaking Point: 6. Don't negotiate with your child about this process. Listen to their voice on this transition, but hold your authority on the process. Speaking Point: Children who are "school ready" a week or two prior to the beginning of the school year will hit the ground running, without the usual avoidance of school at any cost other students tend to have….By the time those kids have had their two week transition, they are already facing their first exam!
