How to Look Great in a Uniform for Work! Step it Up with Pride!
Guestpert: Eve Michaels
Category: Career and Workplace
  JJI Seal of Approval

Speaking Point: Many industries require employees to wear a uniform. The hotel and restaurant industries, for example require a uniform, or a very specific dress code. Wearing a uniform should not be an excuse to look messy and unstylish. When you wear a uniform you are representing your company. Your uniform is a symbol of their image and you need to wear it with pride. Pride begins with self-respect: for your person, for your position and for your work. Pride is contagious and will help boost not only your morale but also your company’s.

Speaking Point: Here are the reasons why you need to look your best in your uniform: 1. Brings immediate pride and respect to yourself and your company 2. Food and hotel industries: makes everything look cleaner 3. Instills customer confidence 4. Instills trust in your company’s product and services 5. Helps you look promotable 6. Attaches a positive image to your company and boosts profits 7. Gives you and your company the competitive edge 8. Makes you feel more positive and important

Speaking Point: Here are my top tips to look great fast in any service uniform: 1. Impeccable grooming from head to toe: white clean teeth, nice complexion (no blackheads or flaky skin) clean hair, no dandruff, manicured fingernails, well shaven, groomed eyebrows, smell nice, showered and fresh. 2. Modern hairstyle with the right hair styling products: not overly gelled or sprayed. Well maintained hair color with no unsightly regrowth showing 3. Women: wear a good fitting supportive bra, the right panties so no panty lines show or use a smoothing slip or camisole when needed. Men: wear a properly fitting undershirt to catch perspiration that does not show at the neck or sleeves.

Speaking Point: 4. Flattering clean eyeglasses (no old yellowing nosepads) 5. Stylish shoes that are the best quality you can afford: consistently well polished and well heeled. 6. Uniform is professionally tailored to fit you impeccably, clean, stain-free and nicely pressed. Use starch where appropriate. 7. Minimal yet flattering jewelry 8. Hosiery or socks in coordinating color to your shoes or uniform (see company guidelines). Men: socks must have good elastic and be the right height to hide leg hair. Women: no runs or obvious snags in your hosiery, socks in the right length and fabric 9. Professional makeup for women that is well applied/blended in soft neutral colors 10. Minimal to no cologne or perfume as many people are allergic

Speaking Point: I highly suggest that you take the time, money and effort to look your best every day in your uniform. The results will be well worth it! Brush and floss after lunch. Women, reapply lipstick during your breaks and remove excess shine from your face. Men: remove shine from your face during the day and comb your hair if necessary. Keep an emergency kit in your locker: small sewing kit, lint brush, disposable stain remover pads, safety pin, fabric tape and anything else that will help you always look your best. Most important element: Wear your uniform with pride!
