It's a startling statistic given that we know so much more about health, fitness and the body, today than ever before.
So...what's a parent to do to get their children involved and off the couch?
Create "Family Fitness" as part of the Family rituals and culture you, as a parent, model as a priority.
You don't have to spend a great deal of money joining gyms or fitness programs if you can't affor Speaking Point: 1. The family spends quality time together. Speaking Point: 2. It gives you a great space and time to have genuine conversations with your children. Speaking Point: 3. You model great effort, hard work, and a consciousness of what it takes for a healthy lifestyle. Speaking Point: 4. You live the model of balance between work, play and health. Speaking Point: 5. You build teamwork skills, fitness skills, and self-regulating skills in your kids. Speaking Point: 6. And you make a priority out of having fun as a family. Speaking Point: Family Fitness is a wonderful idea for all families of all ages. Speaking Point: The hard part for parents is making this a priority, building it into the schedule and getting through the initial resistance of your children. But parents, keep your resolve, don't get discouraged and be consistent. Speaking Point: If you believe in it as a lifestyle, model it in your Family culture, your children will eventually embrace fitness as a part of their identity as well.
