Casey Anthony - Why she makes great television
The Casey Anthony trial falls perfectly between the changes of daytime programming seasons. Most major daytime television shows are on hiatus which leaves reruns. We also have the departures of daytime programming institutions like Oprah, One Life to Live, and All My Children.
With this said, Casey Anthony fills the gap for drama. We love stories about 'mom's' in daytime, and crazy pretty moms are the most interesting. We followed Susan Smith in her love sick drama that lead her to drown her two boys in a pursuit to win back the attention of their father. We were obsessed with Jon Bonnet Ramsey and her beauty queen mom from Boulder, Colorado, "Patsy" Ramsey, and we followed Nancy Grace as she looked for Natalee Holloway.
The Casey Anthony story is like a tragic Greek myth where the unthinkable occurs. Could a mother 'really' kill her own child? Could she really kill her own child and go out partying that night?
As much as we don't like to admit it, it's still a soap opera. There are lies, deceit, detective work, forensics and we are so accustomed to reality stories, especially when the lead is attractive and the story is tragic.
